c418only

by sudoers

With c418only installed, the ambient background music in Minecraft Java Edition is replaced by C418's own tracks, removing the tracks other composers added since 1.16.

What it does

The mod strips non-C418 ambient and background tracks that Mojang has gradually added since 1.16, and remaps the music event slots so they play C418's Volume Alpha and Beta material instead. Lena Raine, Kumi Tanioka, Aaron Cherof and Samuel Åberg wrote the replaced tracks, and the mod leaves those composers' work in the game files untouched; only the event mappings change.

The mod only overrides sounds.json event mappings, so it ships no audio files of its own and redistributes no music. The audio remains Mojang's assets from the player's own installation. Music discs are completely untouched, and the still tracks found in loot chests keep their behavior. Nothing else in the game is changed, and the mod adds no gameplay changes, performance cost or config screen.

It is a Fabric mod for the 1.21.x line and later, published for game versions 1.16 – 26.3 with 40 release versions. It runs on the client only, so servers do not need it. The code is under the MIT License and is open source, with the source code and issue tracker publicly available.

Key features

  1. C418 music in event slots

Ambient event slots are remapped to play C418's tracks, including Volume Alpha and Volume Beta.

  2. Non-C418 ambient removal

Ambient and background tracks by other composers, added since 1.16, are removed from the rotation.

  3. Vanilla assets stay intact

Music discs and loot chest tracks keep their original behavior, since only the event mappings are overridden.

  4. Uninterrupted listening

The tracks play through without being interrupted by replaced ambient music from other sources.

Questions

No. It is installed on the player's side alone, so servers need nothing.

Which loader does c418only use?

It is published only for Fabric, with a latest file for 26.3 dated 2026-09-25.

Does c418only include the music files?

No. It only overrides sounds.json event mappings, and the audio stays in Mojang's assets from the player's own installation.

What the author says

c418only strips all non-C418 ambient music from the game and remaps those slots back to C418 tracks. That's it. Mojang has been gradually replacing the ambient soundtrack since 1.16. Lena Raine, Kumi Tanioka, Aaron Cherof, Samuel Åberg. Some of them make fine music. It's just that they don't make Minecraft music…
