BIC Shield Compat

by night23

BIC Shield Compat lets shield-disabling weapons affect the Skeleton Thrasher and Door Knight mobs from Born in Chaos, which otherwise block with a fake Resistance IV effect.

ForgeServer-side onlyMIT LicenseOpen source1.20.1

What it does

Skeleton Thrasher and Door Knight mobs from Born in Chaos do not use shield items. Instead they gain Resistance IV for a second each time they take a hit from an axe, which normally breaks a shield. Against these mobs a shield does nothing, so the mod changes that behavior.

The mod hooks the melee damage path and checks whether the attacking weapon can disable shields under Forge's canDisableShield rule. When it can, the mob's block cooldown is set to five seconds. Other weapons still get the fake block as before. Tinkers' Construct axes are covered too, and the mod runs without Tinkers' Construct, where it still applies to vanilla axes.

Installation needs Minecraft 1.20.1 with Forge 47.x and Born in Chaos, which is a soft dependency. The mod is server-side only, so the server needs it and players join without installing anything. Its source code is open, under the MIT License, and the latest Forge file is 2.0.0 for 1.20.1, dated 2026-06-10.

Key features

  1. Shield-disabling weapons

Axes that normally break shields can damage the Skeleton Thrasher and Door Knight once the fake block is removed.

  2. Cooldown on the fake block

After a qualifying hit, the mob's block cooldown is set to five seconds, so the fight stays readable.

  3. Tinkers' Construct axes

Axes from Tinkers' Construct are handled, and the mod keeps working when that mod is not installed.

  4. Server-side config

Drop the jar into the server mods folder to use it. A config file is created on the installed server.

Born in Chaos Jade compat is a client-side only Forge mod for 1.20.1 under the MIT License and is open source, so it changes the client display rather than mob behavior. No Skeletons is server-side only for 1.20.1 under All rights reserved and is not open source, so it covers a different part of the mob set. +Shields is a client and server Forge mod for 1.20.1 under All rights reserved, and it is not open source.

Questions

Does BIC Shield Compat require Born in Chaos?

Born in Chaos is a soft dependency. The mod needs Minecraft 1.20.1 with Forge 47.x, and the fix targets the Born in Chaos mobs, so it has no effect without them.

Does Tinkers' Construct have to be installed?

No. Tinkers' Construct is optional. Without it the mod still applies to vanilla axes.

Does this mod need to be installed on the client?

No. Players join without it, since only the server has to run the mod.

What the author says

Server-side Minecraft 1.20.1 Forge mod that makes shield-disabling weapons work against Born in Chaos's blocking mobs. The Skeleton Thrasher and Door Knight don't use shield items; they block by giving themselves Resistance IV for a second whenever they take a hit, so an axe that would normally break a shield does…
