BetterSoundMixer
by ProjectMichi
BetterSoundMixer gives players finer control over Minecraft's sound volumes, down to individual mobs and single sound event files.
What it does
The mod extends the vanilla volume settings with more specific categories. Beyond the standard sliders, players can set separate levels for monsters, friendly mobs, neutral mobs, players, background music, records and ambient sounds. Each mob can also receive its own override, so a particular noisy creature can be muted or lowered while everything else stays as it was.
Volume can be set from 0% (muted) up to 300%, which lets quiet sounds be amplified above the normal level. Lowering loud mobs and raising footsteps is one way to tune the soundscape so that nearby movement is easier to hear. Each sound event's ogg file can also be adjusted directly. Simple GUI API is required and must be installed alongside the mod. BetterSoundMixer is a client-side mod, so only the player needs it and servers can run without it. Files are published for Fabric, Forge and NeoForge across 16 release versions, 1.21 – 26.2, with snapshot builds included. The mod is released under All rights reserved and is not open source.
Key features
Detailed category volumes
Vanilla's broad categories are divided further into monsters, friendly mobs, neutral mobs, players, background music, records and ambient sounds.
Individual mob volume
A volume override can be set for a specific mob, so one creature can be muted or amplified without changing the others.
Per sound event control
The volume of an individual ogg file tied to a sound event can be set directly.
Volume boost to 300%
Volume ranges from muted at 0% up to 300%, so quiet sounds can be raised above the vanilla maximum.

How it compares
Fine Sound Control is open source under the MIT License and runs on Fabric and NeoForge for 1.21.1 – 26.3, with client-side only installation. SoundAdjuster is open source under the GNU General Public License v3.0 only, Fabric only, for 1.21.11 – 26.1. MuteUnFocused is not open source, uses All rights reserved, and covers Fabric, Forge and NeoForge for 1.20 – 26.2; it mutes the game when the window loses focus instead of adjusting categories.
