Ballotbox

by ModFest

Ballotbox is a ModFest social mod that lets players vote on in-game award categories, such as mods nominated for an event, through a server-driven voting screen.

FabricNeoForgeQuiltClient and serverMIT LicenseOpen source1.21 – 26.1

What it does

Ballotbox adds in-game category voting, the kind used to hand out awards at event servers. The server sends the voting options, the categories and each player's earlier selections to the client, which then shows them in a voting screen. Players open it with a hotkey, pause the game and pick options across several award categories while the vote is running. Vote options display the icons of the mods they refer to, looked up by mod ID.

Vote categories and options are data-driven, so server owners define them with data files rather than code. A vote can carry a closing date set in the config, after which voting stops automatically. Selections are saved as persistent world state, and operators at permission level 4 can tally the votes and see the top options for each category.

The mod requires Fabric API. Ballotbox is published for Fabric, NeoForge and Quilt, with files for 1.21, 1.21.1, 1.21.7 and 26.1, and the latest file for each loader is 0.8.1+26.1 for 26.1. It is open source under the MIT License. Every player and the server need a copy of the mod.

Key features

  1. Server-driven voting screen

The server supplies the options, categories and previous selections, and the client shows them in one voting interface.

  2. Data-driven categories and options

Vote categories and options are defined in data, so a server can change what is voted on without editing code.

  3. Operator tally

Operators at permission level 4 can count the votes and list the top options in each category.

  4. Automatic vote closing

A closing date set in the config ends voting on its own, without manual action from an operator.

  5. Persistent selections

Each player's choices are saved as world state, so they remain after a restart.

VoteListener is server-side only and open source under the MIT License, with files for Fabric and Quilt across 1.20 – 26.3, so players can join without installing it. Vote Command is server-side only too, but it runs on Fabric, Forge, NeoForge and Quilt across 1.16.5 – 26.3 and is not open source. VoteKick is the only option here that needs both client and server, with files for Fabric and NeoForge across 1.20.1 – 1.21.11, and it is open source under the MIT License.

Questions

Does Ballotbox need Fabric API?

Yes. Fabric API is a required dependency, so it must be installed next to Ballotbox on Fabric.

Do players need Ballotbox installed to vote?

Yes. Servers that run it need every player to install it too.

Which versions have Ballotbox files?

Files exist for 1.21, 1.21.1, 1.21.7 and 26.1, so a server running another version has no build available.
