Wescraft: Desire Paths

by OttoVR_

Wescraft: Desire Paths is a NeoForge mod in which walking on grass gradually wears paths into the ground, a feature that also includes a Soft Step enchantment.

NeoForgeClient and serverAll rights reserved1.21.1

What it does

Grass blocks that players walk over periodically erode their top layer into coarse dirt, so routes that get used often turn into visible trails. The erosion rate and chance are configurable, and more blocks can be made erodable, which lets the effect reach more terrain. The result is a small amount of realism for travel, similar to the informal footpaths that form where people repeatedly cross a lawn.

Retracing steps across the same ground is what creates the paths, and the mod also covers foliage that gets trampled unintentionally. Some builders want grass left untouched for decorative purposes, so the Soft Step enchantment disables erosion for the player wearing it. Servers that run it need every player to install it too. Files are published for NeoForge 1.21.1 only, with 0.2 as the latest beta from 2026-06-04, under All rights reserved, so the license is not open source.

Key features

  1. Grass erosion from walking

Grass blocks walked over erode their top layer into coarse dirt over time.

  2. Configurable erosion

The interval and the chance of erosion can be adjusted, so server owners can tune how quickly paths appear.

  3. Soft Step enchantment

A new enchantment stops erosion for the wearer, useful when a builder wants to keep the ground intact.

  4. Desire paths from repeated steps

Retracing the same route across grass and foliage is what forms the trails, mirroring real desire paths.

Who it’s for: Players who want terrain to show the history of their movement and server owners who want a more natural world without building paths by hand.
