Webstone

by SniperGER

Webstone lets a WebSocket client remotely control redstone contraptions on a Forge server, by reading and setting the blocks that Webstone registers.

What it does

Webstone connects redstone builds to external software through WebSockets. A server running the mod accepts WebSocket connections, and a connected client can read the powered state and signal strength of registered blocks, or set their output. Blocks are sorted into groups, and each group has an id. When a block group changes, the new data is broadcast to every connected client, and a change to a group only affects the blocks assigned to that group.

Connecting to the server is described in the API Reference. A client must send a hex-encoded string in the Sec-WebSocket-Protocol header, and JavaScript can pass that header as a second argument when creating a WebSocket instance next to the connection URL. On connection the client receives a list of all registered blocks, including their display names. Webstone is published for Forge 1.20.1 – 1.20.6 and is open source under the MIT License. Players join without it, since only the server has to run the mod. The Webstone Remote Block can only be crafted outside Creative mode.

Key features

  1. Remote redstone control

A connected WebSocket client can read and change redstone contraptions over the network.

  2. Block groups

Each registered block is assigned to a group, and updates to a group reach only the blocks in that group.

  3. Live state broadcast

Changes to block groups are pushed to every connected client as they happen.

  4. Optional passphrase and SSL

A passphrase can be required before a client connects, which is stored as a Bcrypt hash, and Secure WebSockets can be enabled with SSL through a configuration key.

Questions

Does Webstone need to be installed on the client?

No. Server owners install it, and players connect with no copy of their own. Players join without installing anything.

Which Minecraft versions does Webstone support?

Forge files are published for 1.20.1, 1.20.2, 1.20.3, 1.20.4, 1.20.5 and 1.20.6, with 1.0.2 for 1.20.6 as the latest file.

How is the passphrase stored?

The passphrase is hashed with Bcrypt, and the plain text is not stored. The hash is generated with mkpasswd on Debian-based systems, which comes from the whois package, and added to the configuration.

What the author says

Remote control your Redstone contraptions using WebSockets. When connecting to the WebSocket server, the connecting client receives a list of currently registered blocks (including their display name, the current powered state, the output signal strength and the assigned group's id, if any), as well as block groups.
