Vintage Damage Indicators

by Angelic Industries

Vintage Damage Indicators shows floating damage numbers and status effect particles for 1.7.10 Forge, backporting the retro damage indicators feature to that version.

ForgeClient required, server optionalGNU Lesser General Public License v3.0 onlyOpen source1.7.10

What it does

Each time an entity takes damage, a number floats above it so players can read the amount without a chat log. Potion status effects also produce particles around affected entities, which helps players tell when an effect is active on a mob or another player. The features aim at the older combat presentation of 1.7.10, so they suit survival and PvP play on that version.

The mod requires FentLib and UniMixins to load, and both must be installed alongside it. It is published only for Forge and only for 1.7.10, with 0.9.4 as the latest file released on 2026-07-30. Players must run the mod to see the indicators, while a server can leave it out entirely. The code is released under the GNU Lesser General Public License v3.0 only, and the project is open source with public source code and an issue tracker.

Key features

  1. Floating damage numbers

Damage dealt to an entity appears as a number above it, showing the amount without opening a log.

  2. Potion status particles

Entities under a potion effect show status particles, so active effects stay visible at a glance.

  3. Retro presentation

The indicators reproduce the look of a damage display from the 1.7.10 era, adapted to that version.

Use cases

Who it’s for: The mod suits players who play 1.7.10 Forge and want damage numbers and effect particles in their client. Because only the client needs it, it can be added to a server running the same version without any server-side install.

How it compares

Full comparison

NonUpdate-Retro is a Forge mod for 1.7.10 that works on either side, and neither needs it, under the Mozilla Public License 2.0, and it is open source. Entity Glow (Backport) is a client-side only mod for 1.8.9 under the MIT License, also open source, so it targets a different version. Vintage KubeJS is for 1.18.2 – 1.20.1 and runs on client and server, so it does not overlap with this 1.7.10 display mod.

Questions

Does Vintage Damage Indicators need FentLib and UniMixins?

Yes. FentLib and UniMixins are both required dependencies, so they must be installed next to the mod on Forge 1.7.10.

Does the server need Vintage Damage Indicators?

No. Players must run it to see the indicators, but a server can skip it, and players can join without it.

Is there a Forge build for other Minecraft versions?

No. The mod is published only for Forge on 1.7.10, with 0.9.4 as the latest file.

Does the mod depend on a specific version of its own?

The author notes an optional required version of 0.9.3 below the latest file, so 0.9.3 is the earliest build that the notes name.
