Variants-CIT

by Estecka

Variants-CIT replaces per-variant rules with one module that matches a whole collection of item variants at once, for items that have many variants built from the same data.

FabricClient-side onlyEuropean Union Public License 1.2Open source1.21 – 26.3

What it does

Instead of writing a separate condition for each variant, a single module names the affected item, derives its variant identifiers and points to where their models or textures live. An enchanted book carrying level 2 of the unbreaking enchantment is matched under a combined identifier and picks up a texture named after it, and the same module applies to every enchantment, vanilla or modded, provided a matching texture is present.

The format is aimed at very large numbers of custom item variants. It performs better than per-case assignments when many such variants are present, and it needs one short configuration file for all of them. Assigning models case by case still works through this mod but gains no speed advantage. The mod is client-side only, so only the client needs it. It requires Fabric API, is open source under the European Union Public License 1.2, and has files for 1.21 – 26.3 across 17 release versions, with snapshot builds published.

Key features

  1. Collection-wide modules

One module governs every variant of an item, defining its variant identifiers and the location of their models.

  2. Automatic name matching

Variant models or textures are linked to items by matching names, so no separate rule is needed per variant.

  3. Data-driven variants

Variant identifiers are built from item data such as enchantments and their levels, which lets one rule cover modded entries too.

  4. Compact resource format

A less redundant format means a single short file can configure all possible variants of an item.

Use cases

Large enchanted book sets

Texture packs that give each enchantment and level its own book look can use one module instead of one rule per combination.

Who it’s for: Resource pack authors who maintain large sets of item variants built from repeating data, such as enchantments, and who want fewer configuration files.

Questions

Does Variants-CIT need Fabric API?

Yes. Fabric API is a required dependency and must be installed alongside Variants-CIT on Fabric.

Is Variants-CIT needed on a server?

No. The mod is client-side only, so servers run without it and only players install it.

Which game versions does Variants-CIT support?

Files exist for 1.21 – 26.3 across 17 release versions, with the latest Fabric file 5.7.1+26.3 for 26.3, published 2026-10-13.

Does a single module work for modded enchantments?

Yes, as long as a texture named with the matching variant identifier exists. The same module covers every enchantment, vanilla or modded.

In the catalog

Variants-CIT is one of 3,514 Library mods on ModsFinder, and one of 2,348 Library mods for Fabric. 8,071 mods support Minecraft 26.3.

What the author says

This mod excels in scenarios where one item has many variants all based on the same pieces of data. It yields better performances when extreme amounts of CITs are available, and uses a resource format that is less redundant, requiring only one short file to configure all possible variants of an item at once…
