Universal Settings

by WhiteMCWizard

Universal Settings keeps a player's game options, server list and key bindings in step across every computer and game instance that the player signs into.

What it does

The mod is a client-side Minecraft mod for Fabric, Forge and NeoForge that syncs settings across computers and instances. A fresh install pulls the saved settings on first launch, and any change made afterwards is uploaded so other installs receive it. The synced data covers options.txt and the multiplayer server list in servers.dat, and the saved profile is tied to the player's Minecraft username and UUID. Fabric API is required on Fabric.

The sync runs through a central sync server, built with Node.js, Fastify and SQLite, that the author operates at universalsettings.whitemcwizard.nl. A self-hosted sync server can be run from a bundled Compose package, where the API sits behind Caddy and receives an automatic HTTPS certificate for the domain the operator sets, which lets a player run a private instance instead of the default one. Sync is paused while the game runs in offline mode, and local settings stay untouched. Files are published for 1.20 – 26.3, with 0.1.1 as the latest build on each loader.

Identity is verified by reusing the Mojang session handshake that the game performs when connecting to multiplayer servers, so the player never signs in a second time. Secrets are not exposed: the handshake never reveals the password or launcher token. Source code and an issue tracker are public, and the code is open source under the MIT License.

Key features

  1. Syncing options and servers

Options from options.txt and the multiplayer server list in servers.dat are uploaded and restored on other installs.

  2. Named profiles

A player can keep several named profiles and mark one as the default, for example one for a laptop and one for a desktop.

  3. One-time choice on install

An install that already has customized settings gets a one-time choice: keep its settings as a new profile or switch to the synced ones.

  4. Ignored settings screen

A settings screen lets the player exclude items from syncing, such as the server list, or turn off server syncing in-game.

  5. Deleting a profile

Removing a profile in-game also removes its stored copy on the server, so the data does not remain after deletion.

Questions

Does Universal Settings require Fabric API?

Yes. Fabric API is required, and it must be installed on Fabric next to Universal Settings.

Does the server need the mod installed?

No. It is installed on the player's side alone, so servers need nothing.

What happens to local settings when the game is offline?

Syncing pauses while the game runs in offline mode, and local settings remain as they were.
