Torches Burn Out

by armet06

Torches Burn Out makes placed torches extinguish at random, and adds new items that let players relight or keep them burning.

NeoForgeClient and serverMIT LicenseOpen source1.21.1

What it does

The chance for a torch to burn out is set in the config, and a random tick decides when it happens. The default timing is comparable to how long a wheat block takes to grow, and the value can be lengthened or shortened. Burnt torches can be reignited with flint and steel, and torches placed underwater go out at once because they are waterlogged.

Torches generated naturally in the world are unaffected, so village and structure lighting stays as vanilla intended. The mod adds a small number of new items and changes the balance only slightly. It is meant for players who experiment with the lighting options that newer versions of Minecraft provide, and it suits permanent builds that need steady light. It runs on client and server, so both sides need it. It is for NeoForge 1.21.1 and is released under the MIT License as open source.

Key features

  1. Configurable burn-out chance

A config option sets how often a placed torch burns out on a random tick, with a default similar to wheat growth time.

  2. Reignition with flint and steel

Burnt torches can be lit again with flint and steel, so a extinguished torch does not need to be replaced.

  3. Underwater extinguishing

Torches placed underwater are waterlogged and go out immediately, matching the way water behaves in the game.

  4. Natural torches left alone

Torches that generate in the world do not burn out, so structures keep their intended atmosphere.

Use cases

Permanent builds

Players who build lasting bases can use the lighting options without the upkeep of relighting torches by hand.

Who it’s for: Players who want torches to feel like a light source that needs attention, and server owners who want a small, configurable change to lighting that leaves the rest of vanilla alone.

What the author says

Extinguishable torches have been implemented many times — this mod aims to be the simplest, most vanilla-friendly iteration, adding no new items and affecting balance minimally. It's just a little touch I think makes the game seem more complete. Gently encourages experimenting with Minecraft's many new aesthetic…
