TickShield

by earlystream

TickShield is a server-side Fabric mod that spreads heavy game work across several ticks to keep tick rate steady under load.

What it does

When a server tick carries too much work, TickShield moves non-critical tasks to later ticks instead of letting one tick absorb the whole cost. Situations that cause this include TNT chains, mob farms and redstone systems. A server-side tick load monitor keeps the server within a safe range while the work runs.

The mod changes how work is scheduled, not what the work produces. Vanilla mechanics and outcomes are kept, so gameplay does not change; the result is smoother play with fewer freezes and more consistent performance. Single-player worlds, LAN games and dedicated servers can all run it. It is meant to run next to larger performance mods that each cover a different layer, and Fabric API must be installed with it. TickShield is published for 1.21.11 only.

TickShield is released under the Mozilla Public License 2.0, and its source code and issue tracker are public. It requires a configuration step before use, and its latest Fabric file, 0.1.0 for 1.21.11, was published on 2026-04-12.

Key features

  1. Tick load monitoring

The server measures its tick load in real time and aims to hold it within a safe range.

  2. Delayed non-critical work

Work that is not time-critical is spread across several ticks rather than running in one.

  3. Vanilla behavior kept

The mod changes when work runs, leaving the game's mechanics and their results as they are.

  4. Works in every world type

Single-player, LAN and dedicated server worlds can all use the server-side mod.
