The Reckoning: Afterlife

by nexusrealms

With The Reckoning: Afterlife, dying sends a player into a dungeon realm where the only way back is to complete rituals and craft a rift.

FabricQuiltClient and serverMIT License1.19.2 – 1.20.1

What it does

Death carries real stakes in this mod. A player who dies is transported to Afterlife, a separate realm that can be left only by clearing dungeons, gathering items and performing rituals. Dungeons are generated procedurally, with varied enemies, puzzles and environments, so each run through the realm is different.

Progress toward escape works in steps. Dungeon rewards supply ritual components, and three completed rituals assemble the Cursed Eye. Combining eight portal shards with the Cursed Eye creates the Broken Rift, which is the exit. The mod needs Ritual thingy, and Rift Realms Utility is an optional addition.

The mod runs on Fabric and Quilt for 1.20.1, with builds also listed for 1.19.2. Both sides have to run it, and every player on the server needs it too. It is released under the MIT License and is not open source. The latest file, 0.4, is marked as an alpha build and was published on 2025-01-31.

Key features

  1. High-stakes death

Dying moves the player into Afterlife, where escape is the only way forward rather than a respawn at the spawn point.

  2. Randomized dungeons

Procedurally generated dungeons vary their enemies, puzzles and environments, which keeps repeated playthroughs from matching.

  3. Ritual-based escape

Players gather items inside dungeons and perform rituals to open the path back out of the realm.

  4. Ritual components

Completing three rituals in dungeons earns components that are assembled into the Cursed Eye.

  5. Broken Rift

Eight portal shards combined with the Cursed Eye craft the Broken Rift, the exit from Afterlife.

Use cases

Survival with lasting consequences

Players who want death to carry a cost can use Afterlife as the penalty, with every return requiring a full dungeon run.

Server events

Server owners can run Afterlife as a shared challenge, since all players on the server need the mod to take part.

Who it’s for: Players who want a harsher death penalty than a respawn, and server owners who want a shared dungeon challenge. Both sides need the mod installed.
