Survival Asterisk
by awwshoot
Survival Asterisk is a NeoForge server mod that makes survival harder through configurable tweaks, including random respawns and reduced natural regeneration.
What it does
Survival Asterisk changes how the player recovers from damage. Natural healing is replaced by a slow passive regeneration rate of 1 HP every 3 seconds, and hunger drains more slowly below half, so food matters less for keeping health up. Potions and other consumables become the main way to recover during a prolonged fight.
On death, the player is placed at a random overworld spot at y=300 and receives night vision along with slow falling. The mod also lets the player survey new terrain and choose where to land. Three major changes can be toggled or configured, which makes it a fit for modpacks where a hostile instant-death scenario is common.
The mod runs on the server only, so players join without installing anything. Files are published for NeoForge 1.21.1, 1.21.8 and 1.21.10, under the MIT License as open source. The source code and issue tracker are public.
Key features
Random respawn location
After death the player appears at a random overworld location, high in the air, rather than at the spawn point.
Reduced natural regeneration
Healing by eating is replaced by a slow passive rate, so the player cannot simply stuff food to recover.
Damage floor
Each hit deals at least 4 damage regardless of armor, or the configured minimum, so armor stacking cannot make the player invincible.
Slowed hunger
Hunger drains one point every 5 seconds below half, and can be set to zero entirely.
Configurable changes
Each major change can be toggled or tuned in the config, so server owners pick which tweaks apply.
Compatibility
Latest build for each game version and loader.
Only full game releases are shown. This mod publishes no snapshot builds.
Use cases
Modpack difficulty
Pack authors add it to raise the stakes of survival without changing the content of other mods.
Who it’s for: Server owners and modpack authors who want survival to demand more planning, potions and care after a death.
How it compares
Spawn-Delay is a client and server mod for NeoForge 1.21.1 under the GNU General Public License v3.0 only, and it is open source. Natural Healing Control is also a NeoForge mod, targeting 1.21.1 – 1.21.11, and it is server required with client optional, under the MIT License. Respawn Penalty is server-side only for Fabric 1.21.8, which makes it a different loader choice.

What the author says
This mod makes three (configurable/toggleable) major changes to the game. Whenever you die, you respawn at a random location in the overworld at y=300 with night vision and slow falling. This allows you to survey your new environment and choose where to land. This is especially valuable in modpacks where you may wind…
