Random Respawns

by awwshoot

Random Respawns sends a player to a random point near their last respawn point after death, within 8k blocks.

FabricQuiltServer-side onlyMIT LicenseOpen source1.18.1 – 1.18.2

What it does

After a death, the player spawns at a random location chosen around the last respawn point, within a radius measured in thousands of blocks. The mod overrides the spawnpoint each time, so the vanilla bed or anchor position is no longer where the player returns. Because the new spot is usually far from the old base, many deaths can make a game feel closer to hardcore-lite. The environment is server-side only, so players join without installing anything, and the code is under the MIT License, which makes the mod open source. Files cover 1.18.1 and 1.18.2 for Fabric and Quilt.

Key features

  1. Random respawn point

Each death places the player somewhere unpredictable, drawn from a radius around the last respawn point.

  2. Spawnpoint override

The mod replaces the vanilla spawnpoint, so beds and anchors no longer set the place of the next respawn.

  3. Hardcore-lite pacing

Respawns far from the old base make it unlikely a player returns to earlier builds after many deaths.

How it compares

Full comparison

InstaRespawn is a client-side only Fabric and Quilt mod for 1.17 – 1.21.1 under the MIT License, and it is open source. Respawn Points is server-side only for Fabric 1.20.1 under the GNU General Public License v3.0 only, and it is open source. Both differ in version range and in how respawn is handled, so the choice depends on the loader and game version in use.

Questions

Does Random Respawns need to be installed on the client?

No. Server owners install it, and players connect with no copy of their own.

What the author says

Overrides spawnpoints. The player will respawn to a random point within 8k blocks of their last respawn point on death. It's far enough that you're very unlikely to encounter an old base for many deaths, making it a sort of hardcore-lite.
