Subtly Camera Shake

by Meander Studios

Subtly Camera Shake is a Fabric client mod that adds screen shake to in-game events such as explosions, mace strikes and lightning.

FabricClient-side onlyCC0 1.0 UniversalOpen source1.20.1 – 26.2

What it does

Camera shake is triggered by combat hits, explosions, lightning strikes and certain End events like the End Flash and End Gateway creation. Each effect can be tuned in range, duration and intensity, and modifiers let the strength depend on distance from the source. Shake events can also be added or changed through datapacks under the subtlyd/camera_shake/event/ path, so a modpack can define its own effects in JSON.

The mod was originally developed as the core shake system of the Subtly Dungeons project and was later split out as an independent mod. Commands camerashake add and camerashake stop let players or server operators trigger a shake or halt effects in play. A switch is also built into the game's accessibility settings for anyone who wants the effect disabled. Files are published for Fabric only, across 10 release versions, with 2.0+1.20.1 for 1.20.6 as the latest file.

Key features

  1. Combat feedback

Striking a target with a mace produces shake of different strength for standard, air, ground and heavy ground smashes.

  2. Environmental shake

Explosions, lightning strikes and booms produce camera shake, along with the End Flash and End Gateway creation.

  3. JSON configuration

Shake events are defined in JSON, with direct control over range, duration and intensity modifiers.

  4. In-game commands

The camerashake add and camerashake stop commands start a shake or halt one that is running.

Use cases

Modpacks with custom effects

A modpack can add or modify shake events through datapacks without changing the mod's code.

Who it’s for: Players who want more physical feedback in combat and explosions, and modpack authors who want to tune shake events for their pack.

What the author says

We originally developed this system as a core mechanic for our main project, Subtly Dungeons, but we have separated it into an independent mod so it can be easily integrated into any custom modpack. Combat Mechanics: Striking targets with a Mace (including standard air, ground, and heavy ground smashes).
