Spawning Overhaul

by Payangar

Spawning Overhaul changes how hostile mobs appear in a world: the spawn rate depends on where a player is, from the surface down through caves and into forests.

FabricNeoForgeServer required, client optionalMIT LicenseOpen source1.21.1 – 26.2

What it does

Vanilla mobs spawn at the same rate across the world. Spawning Overhaul replaces that with a location-based system that scales spawn chances by depth and tree density. Shallow caves at Y=60 use a 1.0x multiplier with 20% acceptance, while deep caves at Y=-64 reach the maximum 5.0x with 100% acceptance. Sparse areas and dense forests or jungles are scaled the same way, so a deep cave can produce about 25 times more spawns than the surface.

The multipliers are normalized against the highest configured value. With default settings the reference is maxCaveMultiplier 5.0, so a base 0.2x multiplier gives 4% acceptance and the deep-cave value gives 100%. Server owners can set a global spawn rate that applies everywhere, adjust the base multiplier, and set special spawn restrictions for specific mobs. A debug view shows what the spawn system sees at the player's position. Requires operator level 2 to use; the command is reached from the Mods main menu.

The mod is built for servers. Fabric API and YetAnotherConfigLib (YACL) are required, and Mod Menu is optional for opening the settings screen. It is licensed under the MIT License and is open source, with source code and an issue tracker linked publicly. Files target 1.21.1 and 26.2, and the latest builds for Fabric and NeoForge are dated 2026-07-20.

Key features

  1. Depth-based scaling

Spawn multipliers rise progressively from shallow caves at Y=60 to deep caves at Y=-64.

  2. Tree density scaling

Sparse areas and dense forests or jungles receive different spawn multipliers.

  3. Global spawn rate

A global rate applies everywhere and can be adjusted for the whole server.

  4. Special spawn restrictions

Individual mobs can be given their own spawn restrictions in the configuration.

How it compares

Full comparison

Buff Mobs works on Fabric and NeoForge with a server-required, client-optional environment and is open source under the MIT License, for 1.21.1 – 26.3. Mob Blacklist is a Fabric, server-side only option under the MIT License that is open source, for 1.21.1 – 26.1.2. Spawning Overhaul changes where mobs spawn rather than how strong they are.

Questions

Does Spawning Overhaul need Fabric API?

Yes. Fabric API and YetAnotherConfigLib (YACL) are both required, and Mod Menu is optional.

Does a player need to install the mod?

The server must run the mod, while players may add it on their side without it being required.

Which game versions does it support?

Files target 1.21.1 and 26.2, with the latest Fabric and NeoForge builds dated 2026-07-20.

How are spawns scaled?

The 5.0x maximum is the reference, so the base 0.2x gives 4% acceptance while deep caves reach 100%.

What the author says

A Minecraft mod that creates a more immersive mob spawning system based on environmental factors like caves, forests, and structures. Note: Spawn multipliers use normalized probability acceptance based on the highest configured multiplier. With default settings (maxCaveMultiplier = 5.0), the reference is 5.0x: - 0.2x…
