Sound Controller

by BVengo

With Sound Controller installed, players set a separate volume for each sound in the game, either globally or inside chosen regions.

What it does

The mod adds an Individual Sounds button to the default sound options screen, and it can also be opened from Mod Menu or the NeoForge mods list. Its global tab holds one volume slider per sound, with a range from 0% to 200%, and those settings apply on every server the player joins. Sound Controller runs on the client alone, so servers do not need it. Fabric API is required, and Mod Menu is optional.

Regions cover the places where a volume should differ. A box region takes a pair of corner coordinates that sit on opposite diagonals, while a spherical region takes one point and a radius. Region volumes are stored and loaded separately for each server, while global volumes and presets carry over to every server. Presets can be layered on top of the global or regional lists, so several can be active at once. Builds exist for Fabric, NeoForge and Quilt across 24 release versions, 1.20 – 26.3. The code is under the GNU Lesser General Public License v3.0 only, and the project is open source.

Key features

  1. Per-sound volume sliders

Every sound in the game, including sounds added by other mods, gets its own volume slider.

  2. Preview and reset

Buttons beside each slider play a sample at the chosen volume and restore the default value.

  3. Sound search and filter

A search box finds a sound by name, and a filter shows only the sounds whose volume has been changed.

  4. Subtitles as sound IDs

An optional setting replaces vanilla subtitles with sound IDs, which helps identify nearby noises.

  5. Regional volumes

Volume changes can be limited to a box or sphere so they apply only in a given area.

  6. Presets

A preset saves a set of volume changes, such as muting one mob type, and can be applied to any configuration.

Use cases

Muting a noisy mob type

A player silences chickens with one preset, then applies it to each chicken farm through regional settings.

Quieter sounds near a base

A spherical region lowers ambient sounds around a base while the global volume stays unchanged.

Who it’s for: Players who want to change the volume of individual sounds, for example to silence one mob or to tune sounds that differ between areas, and modpack builders who need per-sound control in a client-side setup.

How it compares

Full comparison

Volume Fix is open source under the MIT License, runs client-side only and covers 1.19 – 26.2 across Fabric, Forge, NeoForge and Quilt. Fine Sound Control is also open source under the MIT License and client-side only, but it targets Fabric and NeoForge for 1.21.1 – 26.3. Logarithmic Volume Control is Fabric only, client-side only and open source under the MIT License, for 1.20.1 – 26.3. Sound Controller adds regions and presets, which the alternatives named here do not.

Questions

Does Sound Controller need Fabric API?

Yes. Fabric API is a required dependency on Fabric, and Mod Menu is optional for opening the settings screen.

Does a server need Sound Controller installed?

No. The mod is client-side only, so only the player's game needs it, and servers can run without it.

Are volume changes kept between servers?

Presets and global volumes carry over to every server. Regions are kept separately for each server, so a region set on one server does not follow the player to another.

What the author says

We've all dealt with that loud portal before, or those ridiculously loud mob farms. Perhaps you're even listening out for a particular mob while caving. Have you ever wanted to just fine-tune those specific sounds without being limited by the category sliders? Sound Controller is a client-side Minecraft mod providing…
