SmartScreenshot
by AshKiano
SmartScreenshot writes a companion text file next to each screenshot Minecraft saves, recording metadata about where the picture was taken.
What it does
When the game reports that a screenshot has been saved, the mod reads the final file name assigned to it. It then creates a text file with the exact same name as the PNG, so the two files stay paired. The companion file holds the player's current coordinates, rotation and other F3-style information taken at the moment of capture, which makes it possible to tell where a picture was taken later.
The mod suits documenting builds, sharing locations with other players, organizing world archives and keeping consistent records of a world, as well as video projects such as world tours. It works entirely on the client and needs no server support, and it leaves screenshots in the default screenshots folder so they stay where Minecraft puts them.
SmartScreenshot is published for Fabric only, for game versions 1.21.10 – 26.3. Its files are released under the MIT License and the project is not open source.
Key features
Companion metadata file
Each PNG gets a text file with the same name, created automatically after the game saves the screenshot.
Position and rotation data
The file records the player's coordinates and rotation, plus other F3-style details from the moment of capture.
Default folder kept
Screenshots stay inside the default screenshots folder, so the mod changes no file locations.
Compatibility
Latest build for each game version and loader.
Only full game releases are shown. This mod publishes no snapshot builds.
Use cases
Documenting builds
Builders can look up the coordinates of a finished structure from the text file next to its screenshot.
Sharing locations
A screenshot shared with another player carries the position where it was taken, without manual notes.
Organizing world archives
Metadata files give a world archive consistent records that stay paired with each picture.
Who it’s for: Players who document builds, take screenshots for world tours or keep organized records of their worlds. Only the client needs the mod, so a player can add it to a server that does not run it.
How it compares
ScreenshotFeatures is open source under the GNU General Public License v3.0 or later and runs client-side only on Fabric for 1.21.6 – 26.2. Screenshot Relocator is also client-side only, open source under the MIT License, and covers 1.21.11 – 26.3, so it targets a different range than this mod. Screenshot to Clipboard is not open source under the MIT License and covers 1.21.9 – 26.1.2.

What the author says
SmartScreenshot enhances the default Minecraft screenshot system by automatically generating a companion.txt file every time you take a screenshot. The mod listens for the game’s “Saved screenshot” message, detects the final file name assigned by Minecraft, and then creates a metadata file with the exact same name…
