Realistic Inventory

by Moutarde

Realistic Inventory changes how many inventory slots a player has, based on what the character is wearing, so gear choices matter from the first minute.

What it does

Realistic Inventory replaces the fixed inventory with one that depends on equipment. A new character starts with only two hands and few slots. Equipping leggings adds two extra inventory pockets, and crafted backpacks add nine more slots each, so the carrying capacity follows the gear a player wears.

The mod works in single-player and on multiplayer servers, and it requires server-side installation with Fabric API present. Installing the mod means dropping its JAR file into the mods folder alongside Fabric API. Realistic Inventory is open source under the MIT License and is published for Fabric on 1.20.1 only, with the latest file, 1.4.1, dated 2023-09-26.

Its source code and issue tracker are public, so players can read how the slot rules are implemented or report problems. Because the mod is limited to a single game version, it is most useful to players who stay on 1.20.1.

Key features

  1. Hands-only start

A character begins with two hands, which forces early inventory decisions about what to carry.

  2. Leggings pockets

Wearing leggings adds two extra inventory pockets, giving a reason to choose armor by how much it stores.

  3. Craftable backpacks

Backpacks can be crafted and equipped to add nine extra inventory slots.

  4. Gear-based capacity

The total number of usable slots is set by the equipment the player is wearing at any moment.

Multiplayer servers

Server owners add the mod on the server side so every player's capacity follows the same equipment rules.

Who it’s for: Players who want limited carrying space to matter in survival, and server owners who want an equipment-based inventory rule on a Fabric server running 1.20.1.
