ProtoWeaver
by mrnavastar
ProtoWeaver is a networking library for building custom protocols, and it runs an internal Netty server that its protocols share with Minecraft's own encrypted connection.
What it does
A developer registers raw protocols through the ProtoWeaver API, including ones such as HTTP or SSH, and the protocols run under the same Netty instance that Minecraft uses. Traffic can be wrapped in SSL encryption, and protocol authentication is available. Packets are plain Java objects, and custom serialization is supported, with an example that serializes NBT tags and a step for registering a serializer.
Compression is included as an option, with Gzip, Snappy and LZ. The library needs no configuration from its users, so a mod built on it can be set up without touching settings. The project is open source under the CC0 1.0 Universal license, which places the code in the public domain, and it is published for Fabric, Forge, NeoForge and Quilt with Paper, Purpur, Folia, Velocity and Waterfall listed as server platforms. Files cover 1.14 – 26.1.1 across 45 release versions, and snapshot builds are not mentioned.
Key features
Custom protocols
Developers can create their own protocols on a Netty server that runs alongside the game's connection.
SSL encryption
Protocol traffic can be wrapped in SSL, so custom channels are encrypted.
Protocol authentication
Connections built on ProtoWeaver can be checked with an authentication step before data is exchanged.
Packets as POJOs
Packets are plain Java objects, which keeps the message classes simple to write and read.
Compression options
Gzip, Snappy and LZ compression can be used to reduce the size of data sent over a protocol.

Use cases
Who it’s for: The library is aimed at mod developers who need a secure networking layer, and at server owners whose installed mods depend on it.
How it compares
Common Network is a client and server library published for Fabric, Forge, NeoForge and Quilt, open source under the MIT License, with files for 1.16.5 – 26.3. Proxy Protocol Support is server-side only, open source under the MIT License and covers 1.14 – 26.3 on Fabric, Forge and Quilt. MISS works on either side, and neither needs it; it is open source under the GNU General Public License v3.0 or later and covers 1.19 – 1.21.4 on Fabric, Forge and NeoForge.
