Common Network
by mysticdrew
Common Network is a library that unifies networking and packet registration across Fabric, Forge, NeoForge and Quilt, so a mod can keep its packet code in one shared module.
What it does
Developers who write their mod with Jared's MultiLoader Template only need to handle networking in the common module, because the library registers and builds packets the same way on each loader. Packets are constructed so that a Forge build on a client can exchange data with a Fabric build on a server. A custom handshake packet still has to be written by the mod author.
The library is not tied to the MultiLoader Template and can be used in other projects. It is client and server, so both sides need it. Files are published for Fabric, Forge, NeoForge and Quilt, across 25 release versions 1.16.5 – 26.3, and the code is under the MIT License and open source.
Key features
Shared packet registration
Packets are registered once in common code and reused across mod loaders.
Packet construction
Packets are assembled in a shared format that lets a client on one loader read data from a server on another.
Custom handshake packets
Authors write their own handshake packet to confirm that both sides agree on the protocol.
Use outside MultiLoader
The networking code can be adopted in projects that do not use the MultiLoader Template.
