Profanity Guard

by MeAlam1

Profanity Guard filters offensive words out of chat on a server, using word lists that server owners edit through datapacks.

FabricForgeServer-side onlyAll rights reserved1.20.1 – 1.20.6

What it does

Words on the filter list are replaced in player chat before other players read them. By default each flagged word is replaced with hashtags, and the replacement character can be changed through the replacement tag. The aim is a more respectful chat on a server, and the filter works on server owners' word lists rather than on any client setting.

Word lists live in JSON files inside a datapack. Server owners add new terms by placing a file in the profanity folder that follows the given path, and a file placed there is loaded automatically. Aliases and common misspellings can be included in the same file, so variations of a flagged term are blocked together.

Profanity Guard is server-side only, so players join without installing anything. It is published for Fabric and Forge, with files for the 1.20.1 – 1.20.6 range. The latest file is 1.1.0 for 1.20.6, and the code is covered by All rights reserved, so it is not open source.

Key features

  1. Datapack-based word filters

Profanity lists are datapack files, so filtering can be configured without editing the mod's code.

  2. Aliases and misspellings

A single file can hold several profanity terms along with their aliases and common misspellings.

  3. Custom replacement character

The replacement tag lets server owners swap the default hashtags for any character they choose.

  4. Automatic file loading

Word files placed in the profanity folder are picked up on their own, with no extra registration step.

Use cases

Family servers

Owners of servers with younger players can keep the chat free of flagged terms with a single datapack.

Community chat rules

Server owners who maintain their own list of banned words can extend it with new files as the community changes.

Who it’s for: Server owners who want a word filter for player chat. Players need nothing installed, because only the server runs the mod.

How it compares

Full comparison

Chat Control is also server-side only and open source under the GNU Lesser General Public License v3.0 only, but it targets Fabric alone for 1.18.2 – 1.21.1. Censor Chat is client-side only, under the MIT License, and covers Fabric, Forge and Quilt for 1.20 – 1.21. Profanity Guard instead runs on the server with datapack word lists, and it is not open source.

Questions

Does Profanity Guard have to be installed on the client?

No. Players join without it, since only the server has to run the mod.

How are new words added to the filter?

Server owners create a JSON file inside a datapack, following the given path, and place it in the profanity folder. The file loads automatically.

Can the replacement character be changed?

Yes. Words are replaced with hashtags by default, and the replacement tag lets server owners specify a custom character instead.
