Player Weight

by alfuwu

Player Weight gives each item in a player's inventory a weight, so carrying heavy stacks slows the player down.

FabricQuiltServer required, client optionalMIT LicenseOpen source1.19 – 1.20.4

What it does

Weight is set per item through a config file. A text field decides which items the modifier applies to, and the match can be checked against the item ID as plain text, as a regular expression, as an exact ID, or as a tag. Each rule sets a weight, and by default the rule multiplies the item's base weight. A setting switches this to adding the weight instead. Air can be excluded so empty slots add nothing.

Punishments are separate entries in the same config file. A punishment sets how much the player's speed is reduced once total weight passes a chosen fraction of the maximum, for example 90% of original speed above 80% of maximum. A scaling option makes the effect stronger the heavier the player is. Players can be slowed by carrying a lot of an item, and servers can tune the limits.

The mod runs on the server, and clients can join without it. Files are published for Fabric and Quilt, for game versions 1.19 – 1.20.4, and it requires Cloth Config API and Fabric API. It is open source under the MIT License.

Key features

  1. Per-item weight

Each item or matched group of items can be given a weight that overrides its default in the inventory calculation.

  2. Four matching modes

Items can be matched by plain text, regular expression, exact ID or tag, so one rule can cover a whole mod or group.

  3. Multiplicative or additive weights

A config switch decides whether modifiers multiply the base weight or add to it.

  4. Weight punishments

Entries set how far speed drops once carried weight passes a threshold, with an option to scale the effect by weight.

Use cases

Survival pacing

Heavy materials such as stone or ore can be made to matter when a player carries large amounts.

Modded items

A single regex or ID rule can give weight to items from another mod, such as one heavy sludge item.

Who it’s for: Server owners and modpack authors who want carried weight to affect movement. Players can use it on a client, though the server side does the work.

Questions

Does Player Weight need to be installed on the client?

Not necessarily. The server has to run it, while a player's client can work with or without it, so installing it on the client is optional.

What does Player Weight require?

It requires Cloth Config API and Fabric API. Both must be installed alongside it on Fabric or Quilt.

How are item weights matched to config entries?

Each entry chooses a matching mode: plain text, regular expression, exact ID or tag. The mode is set in the config file for each rule.
