Mortui
by alfuwu
Mortui turns players into undead after they are killed by zombies, changing how the character moves, eats and interacts with the world.
What it does
A player who is killed by a zombie does not simply respawn as a player. Becoming a zombie is a simple process, and the term zombie also covers other zombified players. Mortui's zombie state changes the hotbar, so the offhand item is reduced to the mainhand item. Undead players are incapable of interacting with villagers and burn in daylight like other monsters, which means they must find another way to survive.
Food works differently for an undead player. Golden apples and rotten flesh behave as usual, but other detrimental foods give hunger status. Undead players can gain food by attacking other players and villagers. The mod also makes the undead player unable to swim, though the body still bobs in water. Curing oneself follows the same route as a zombie villager, and the weakness status effect is the counter used with a golden apple.
Mortui requires Architectury API, Cardinal Components API and Fabric API. Client rendering of effects such as zombie arms and shaders is technically required, so the mod works only where it is installed on the client. Every player and the server need a copy of the mod. Files are published for Fabric, Forge and Quilt across 13 release versions, 1.18 – 1.20.4.
Key features
Zombie transformation
A player killed by a zombie becomes undead, and the state can spread to other players.
Altered hotbar
The undead state reduces the hotbar so the offhand item no longer works separately from the mainhand item.
Restricted interaction
Undead players cannot interact with villagers and burn in daylight, as hostile monsters do.
Hunger and curing
Detrimental food gives hunger, while attacking players or villagers supplies food, and curing uses the zombie villager process with a weakness effect and a golden apple.

What the author says
This mod requires Cardinal Components API for Fabric versions and Architectury for Forge versions. In Minecraft, villagers can become zombies when killed by other zombies. The player, on the other hand, cannot. I thought it would be a neat mechanic to implement, and so this mod was created.
