Player Skins
by alfuwu
Player Skins brings the skin and cape system of older Minecraft betas back to b1.7.3 – b1.8.1 on Babric and Ornithe, with Fabric support for the same range.
What it does
Player Skins restores player skins in the beta builds, so each player's appearance follows a custom skin file instead of the default figure. The mod also restores capes, which render on the player model, and adds a slim model option for skins built on the narrower arm layout. A second skin layer can be turned on for overlay textures such as hats and jackets.
Only the client needs the mod: players install it, and servers run without it. Files cover b1.7.3, b1.8 and b1.8.1, and snapshot builds are published as well. The mod is released under the MIT License and is open source, with its source code and issue tracker public. Extra features such as capes, slim models and the second layer can be disabled in the config.
Players on Babric and Ornithe get the same skin behavior, while the Fabric build targets the same beta range. Installing it on the client alone is enough to see custom skins and capes.
Key features
Custom player skins
Each player's model is textured with a skin file, returning the look of the beta era to single-player and multiplayer clients.
Restored capes
Capes render on the player model, as they did in the earlier beta builds.
Slim model option
Skins built for the narrower arm layout can use a slim model instead of the standard one.
Second skin layer
An overlay layer draws extra texture details, such as hats or jackets, on top of the base skin.
Config toggles
Capes, slim models and the second layer can each be switched off in the config file.
