Particle Rain (Backport)
by TheKryzzz_
Particle Rain (Backport) reproduces the rain and snowfall effects of the original Particle Rain on the 1.12.2 Forge release, as a client-only addition.
What it does
Rain on this build is drawn with particle effects instead of the vanilla weather layer. Ripples appear where drops hit water, streaks trace the faces of structures and glass, and hot blocks such as magma, lava and fire send up rising steam. Biome-tuned fog colors are added as well, so swamps look murky green, jungles misty green and rainy areas grey-blue. The package is a rewrite of the original code for the 1.12.2 rendering engine, carrying over the core particle systems and biome-specific fog from the later version.
The mod is a backport, so it targets the classic 1.12.2 release rather than newer builds. Its effects are tuned for stability in older modpacks, and it is released under the MIT License, which is not open source. Only the client needs it: players install it on their own game, and servers run without it.
Key features
Dynamic surface interactions
Rain produces ripple effects on water surfaces, so the weather visibly strikes the ground and lakes.
Block streaks
Water traces the faces of structures and glass, following the shape of the blocks it touches.
Steam from hot blocks
Rainfall on magma, lava and fire blocks produces rising steam smoke.
Biome-specific atmosphere
Dust and particles appear over deserts, with tumbleweeds and shrubs, and fog takes a color suited to each biome.

Use cases
Older modpacks
The effects are tuned for the 1.12.2 rendering engine, which suits packs built around that version.
Rainy builds and scenes
Streaks, ripples and steam make rain more visible on houses, water and lava-lit areas.
Who it’s for: Players who run 1.12.2 Forge modpacks and want richer rain and fog without a server-side change. Single-player and multiplayer clients can both use it on their own.
How it compares
Just A Campfire is a client and server mod for 1.12.2 under the CC0 1.0 Universal license, and it is not open source. Always Rain is server-side only for 1.12.2 under All rights reserved, so it changes weather for the server rather than the player's view. Darwin Water Ambience is client-side only for 1.7.10 under the MIT License, a different version from this one. BetterWeather targets 1.20.1 – 1.20.6 for both client and server, so it does not cover 1.12.2.
