Packtils
Packtils is a Forge utility for Minecraft 1.8.9 that helps modpack makers set the window title and icon and prompt players about OptiFine.
What it does
Packtils gives a modpack its own window title and window icon, so the game window shows the pack's identity instead of the default Minecraft branding. It also offers a Minecraft Modpack Utility feature that checks for an existing OptiFine install and prompts the player to install it when it is missing, skipping the prompt when OptiFine is already present.
The mod runs on the client only, so only the player's game needs it and servers run without it. Packtils bundles OneConfig, a configuration library, inside the mod, so no separate installation of that library is required. Files are published for Forge and cover 1.8.9 alone, with V0.2 as the latest build, released 2025-08-22 on the beta channel.
The source code and issue tracker are public, and the mod is open source under the MIT License. Packtils was first published on 2024-09-28 and last updated on 2025-08-22.
Key features
Custom window title
The title shown in the Minecraft window can be set to a name chosen for the modpack.
Custom window icon
The icon shown in the window and taskbar can be replaced with an image chosen for the modpack.
OptiFine prompt
Players without OptiFine are asked to install it, and players who already have it are not asked again.
Bundled OneConfig
The OneConfig library ships inside Packtils, so modpack makers do not need to add it as a separate file.

Use cases
Who it’s for: Modpack makers who distribute a Minecraft 1.8.9 Forge pack and want to control the window title, icon or OptiFine check. Players who install a pack that includes Packtils see the prompt and window changes from the pack itself.
How it compares
Packtils is a client-side utility for Forge 1.8.9 and is open source under the MIT License. Legacy Chunk Borders (Forge) is also client-side only, open source under the MIT License, and works on Forge 1.8.9, but it draws chunk borders rather than handling window branding. Yqloss Client (Mixin) is client-side only and open source under the GNU General Public License v2.0 only, targeting the same version, with a broader set of client features.
