OfflineLAN

by Aeroshide

Players hosting a world can switch off online-mode from the Open To LAN screen with OfflineLAN, a Fabric mod that moves a server.properties setting into the client.

FabricClient and serverGNU General Public License v3.0 or laterOpen source1.14 – 26.3

What it does

Online-mode is a server setting that decides whether players must authenticate with Mojang's servers before joining. When it is on, each player's account is verified; when it is off, that check is skipped. OfflineLAN makes the setting available inside the Open To LAN and Multiplayer menu of a single-player world, where it was not previously reachable.

The toggle defaults to on, matching server.properties, so the change only takes effect when a player deliberately turns it off. It applies only when the world is opened to LAN, so installing the mod does not weaken a world on its own. Connections then behave as they would on a dedicated server, whether the world is port-forwarded or shared through e4mc or e4mcbiat. Disabling online-mode lets an offline-mode launcher instance, such as one run from MultiMC, join the world.

The mod is open source under the GNU General Public License v3.0 or later. Fabric API is required, and the 2.0.0 release lists it as a hard dependency. Vanilla clients can join without the mod, so it is only needed on the machine hosting the world.

Key features

  1. Open To LAN toggle

An online-mode option appears in the Open To LAN and Multiplayer screens, so the setting can be changed without editing files.

  2. Off by default

The option starts in the on position, so authentication stays required unless the host switches it off.

  3. Scoped to LAN sessions

The setting applies only when a world is opened to LAN, not during every session.

  4. Port-forwarding and relay support

Connections work the way they do on a dedicated server, including port-forwarded worlds and e4mc or e4mcbiat relays.

Use cases

Offline-mode launcher accounts

A second Minecraft instance started in offline mode in MultiMC can join a world the host has opened to LAN with online-mode disabled.

Friends on a relay

Hosts sharing a world through e4mc or e4mcbiat can allow players without Mojang accounts to connect.

Who it’s for: Single-player players who open their worlds to LAN and want to control whether joining players must authenticate. Owners who run worlds that others join should read the caveats first, since disabling authentication exposes the world to malicious players.

Questions

Does OfflineLAN need Fabric API?

Yes. Fabric API is a required dependency, and the 2.0.0 release lists it as a hard requirement.

Do other players need the mod?

No. Servers that run it need every player to install it too.

Is it safe to turn online-mode off?

The author warns that the option is dangerous. Anyone can join an unauthenticated world, so a backup and a security layer should be in place first.
