What it does

Nox is a difficulty mod for Fabric and Quilt that reworks the mobs in a world. Its author describes it as a mob difficulty overhaul, drawing on ideas from other mods such as Rough Mobs 2 and Epic Siege Mod. The mod is server-side only: the server needs it, and players join without installing anything. Basic configuration is available, and the author plans more options.

Nox requires MidnightLib on both loaders, so that library has to be installed alongside it. Files are published for 1.18, 1.18.1, 1.18.2, 1.19, 1.19.1 and 1.19.2, with v2.4 for 1.19.2 as the latest build on both loaders, dated 2022-09-20. Snapshot builds have also been published. The code is released under the Mozilla Public License 2.0, so Nox is open source and its source code and issue tracker are public.

Key features

  1. Mob difficulty changes

Hostile mobs are adjusted so that encounters in the world feel harder than vanilla, with the rules set by the mod.

  2. Server-side operation

Only the server needs the mod, so players can join a Nox server with a vanilla client.

  3. Basic configuration

Settings for the mob changes can be edited, and the author notes that further options are planned.

  4. Public source code

The source code and issue tracker are public, so anyone can read how the changes are made.

Use cases

Survival servers

Server owners who want harder mob encounters for their players can install Nox on the server alone.

Adventure play

Solo players on a local world with a server running the mod can take on the adjusted mobs in exploration.

Who it’s for: Server owners who want to change how hostile mobs behave are the main audience. Players who connect to such a server need no installation, and singleplayer use depends on running the mod on the local server side.

Questions

Does Nox need MidnightLib?

Do players have to install Nox?

Which game versions does Nox support?

What the author says

Nox is a mob and difficulty overhaul striving to make a return to when nights were scary, legitimately threatening, and a present threat. Note: Nox is in beta and requires feedback as to the balance of it's changes. Basic configuration is available, more is being planned.
