Nice Huds

by NiceRon

Nice Huds puts a configurable HUD on screen for clocks, compasses and calendar events, and it needs a server to run.

FabricForgeNeoForgeQuiltServer required, client optionalGNU General Public License v3.0 or laterOpen source1.21 – 1.21.5

What it does

Holding a clock, a compass or a recovery compass shows a matching readout. Clocks show the in-game time and date, compasses show coordinates and the direction the player faces, and a recovery compass shows the last place the player died. A boss bar can also appear while these items are held, and its color changes with the dimension the player is in.

The mod adds a calendar and time system with seasons and eight in-game events, among them a spring holiday, a late-December celebration, a Halloween celebration, a Mexican holiday of the dead, a Friday the 13th event, April Fools, Valentine's Day and New Year's Eve. The display can use a 12-hour or 24-hour clock. The calendar can conflict with vanilla day-count and time commands, so the config files should be checked on a server.

Nice Huds is open source under the GNU General Public License v3.0 or later. Files are published for Fabric, Forge, NeoForge and Quilt across six release versions, 1.21 – 1.21.5, and snapshot builds are also published. The server must run it, while players may add it, and either side works without the other. The mod also works as a data pack on server platforms.

Key features

  1. Held item readouts

Clocks, compasses and recovery compasses each display their own information while the player holds them.

  2. Dimension boss bar

A boss bar appears for held items, and its color follows the dimension the player is in.

  3. Calendar and seasons

A time system tracks days, seasons and eight in-game events, with the clock shown in 12-hour or 24-hour format.

  4. Item frame clocks

Clocks placed in glow item frames on walls show the current time and date, and only wall frames are supported.

  5. Position command

A trigger command sends a timestamped chat message containing the player's current position.

How it compares

Full comparison

Nice Actions is also a server-required, client-optional mod under the GNU General Public License v3.0 or later, open source, but it is published for 1.21.6 – 26.3 and does not cover the 1.21 – 1.21.5 range. Compass Coordinates shares the same environment, with an MIT License and files for 1.21 – 26.3, and it is not open source. Quickr is client-side only, under the MIT License, for 1.21 – 1.21.1 on Fabric and Quilt, so it runs without a server.

Questions

Does Nice Huds need to be on the server?

The server must run the mod, while players may install it to see the HUD. Either side works without the other on the client, but the server side is required.

Which loaders does Nice Huds support?

Files are published for Fabric, Forge, NeoForge and Quilt, and the latest file for each is 1.7.2+mod for 1.21.5.

Can the calendar conflict with vanilla time commands?

Yes. The in-game calendar time system can conflict with time commands and the vanilla day counter, so the config files should be checked.

What the author says

You can utilize either the data from the storage or users of the scoreboard. But if you are playing on a PaperMC Server (or a PaperMC Fork like Purpur) make sure to set allow-non-player-entities-on-scoreboards in your paper config files to true in order for everything to work properly.
