MuddyWaters

by DiT-Dev

Over time, MuddyWaters converts dirt blocks under water into mud, leaving the world generation settings unchanged, and it is a server-side only Fabric mod.

FabricServer-side onlyMIT License26.2 – 26.3

What it does

Dirt blocks that sit under water gradually turn into mud, and the shoreline grass around a biome is converted into the biome's mapped shoreline blocks such as coarse dirt, cobblestone or podzol. Source water converts the dirt beneath it after a delay of about 5 minutes (6000 ticks), while flowing water takes longer. Dirt next to mud converts a little faster, so the change spreads in patches instead of all at once, and the result looks more organic across a whole waterlogged area.

The mod is meant for worlds where mud looked strange as the blocks beneath water, and it converts only generated and loaded chunks without touching world generation. It requires Cloth Config API, Fabric API and Mod Menu, all three of which must be installed. The environment is server-side only, so the conversion happens regardless of what clients run, and the license is the MIT License, though the mod is not open source. Files are published for Fabric only, for game versions 26.2 and 26.3, with 1.3.0 for 26.3 as the latest file, and an issue tracker is linked.

Key features

  1. Timed dirt-to-mud conversion

Dirt under source water converts to mud after about 5 minutes, and dirt under flowing water takes longer.

  2. Biome-mapped shorelines

Shoreline grass converts into the shoreline blocks mapped to each biome, with configurable depth and blocks.

  3. Configurable transition bands

Bands of shoreline blocks can be set to blend between the shoreline and the surrounding blocks.

  4. Protected player blocks

A toggleable setting keeps dirt or mud placed by a player from being converted.

Questions

Does MuddyWaters need Fabric API?

Yes. Cloth Config API, Fabric API and Mod Menu are all required, so each must be installed alongside MuddyWaters.

Does a player need to install MuddyWaters?

No. Only the server needs it, and players join without installing anything.

Can player-placed dirt be excluded from conversion?

Yes. A toggleable setting protects blocks placed by players, so dirt or mud they place themselves stays where it is.

What the author says

Since the introduction of Mud blocks, it seemed strange to have dirt under water. Rather than change the world gen, Muddy Waters converts dirt blocks to Mud when touched by a water block for long enough. With this mod, over time, dirt blocks under or next to a water source or flowing water will slowly convert to mud…
