Modern UI

by BloCamLimb

Modern UI replaces parts of the Minecraft text and screen rendering with a font engine and a set of client options for window and screen behavior.

What it does

The mod bundles a text layout engine and rendering system for Minecraft. It reads TrueType and OpenType fonts, reloads them in real time, and draws glyphs with signed distance field text in both 2D and 3D. Color glyphs are drawn from Google Noto colour glyph sets, with support for the Unicode 15.1 set, and the bidirectional text heuristic and text shadow can be configured. The engine is also compatible with the JSON font definitions Minecraft uses for bitmap and TTF fonts.

Beyond text, the mod adds client utilities: a screen background color, Gaussian blur on the backdrop image, a fade-in animation for screens, borderless fullscreen and maximized window modes, a framerate limit and volume fading when the window loses focus, pausing single-player games while the inventory is open, and a slider for the GUI scale option. Settings are opened with Ctrl+K or Command+K, which brings up the configuration screen for the mod.

Only the client needs the mod, and it is open source under the GNU Lesser General Public License v3.0 or later. Forge Config API Port is required, and Fabric API is optional on Fabric. Builds are available for Fabric, Forge, NeoForge and Quilt across 20 release versions, with the range 1.18.1 – 26.1.2 covered by the release list.

Key features

  1. Real-time font reloading

TrueType and OpenType fonts can be previewed and reloaded while the game is running, without restarting the client.

  2. Signed distance field text

Text is drawn with improved SDF rendering in 2D and 3D, with batch rendering and anti-aliasing with FreeType hinting.

  3. Color glyphs and Unicode support

Color glyphs are rendered from a Google Noto colour glyph set and cover the Unicode 15.1 set, with Unicode line breaking and CSS line-break rules.

  4. Window and screen utilities

Options include borderless fullscreen and maximized modes, a screen background color, Gaussian blur on the backdrop and a fade-in animation.

  5. Audio and pause options

The framerate limit and master volume fade when the window is inactive or minimized, and single-player games pause while the inventory is open.

How it compares

Full comparison

Emoji Type is a Client-side only option for 1.16.5 – 26.2 on Fabric, Forge, NeoForge and Quilt, licensed under the GNU General Public License v3.0 or later. It covers emoji rendering but not the font engine, while Modern UI is licensed under the GNU Lesser General Public License v3.0 or later. Embers Text API is a Fabric, Forge and NeoForge library for 1.20.1 – 26.2 under a custom license that is not open source, so it differs from Modern UI in both license and loader support.

Questions

Does Modern UI need Forge Config API Port?

Yes. Forge Config API Port is a required dependency on every loader, and Fabric API is only needed on Fabric, where it is optional.

Does Modern UI have to be installed on the server?

No. Only the client needs it, so server owners do not need to install it.

Which versions does Modern UI support?

Builds cover 20 release versions across the 1.18.1 – 26.1.2 range. Fabric, Forge and NeoForge share 3.13.0.5 for 26.1.2 as the newest build, and Quilt's newest is 3.13.0.1 for 1.21.1.

How are the settings opened?

On the client, Ctrl+K or Command+K opens the configuration screen, and the font preferences are reached from the Preferences screen.
