Modern Beta Forge adds terrain generators that recreate the landscapes of early Minecraft releases in 1.12.2 worlds, and it runs on client and server.
What it does
Each generator reproduces the terrain of one early release, from the Beta period back through the Alpha and Infdev and Indev builds. Players can choose the generator when a world is created, and the toggle-able features of each release can be switched on or off. Generator settings are stored in the server.properties file, so server owners can adjust them without a client change.
The mod is a faithful re-implementation of the original Fabric version, extended with a few additional improvements and fixes. It supports custom add-ons, and the author lists some mods known to cause issues. Generation of non-Beta chunk sources is accurate only when a built-in preset is selected first, since changing the chunk source also requires updating the noise settings. The mod requires MixinBooter, and it runs on client and server, so both sides need it. Four other catalog mods require it: Modern Beta Forge Rivers, Modern Beta Forge Release Plus, Modern Beta Forge Islands and Modern Beta Forge Voronoi Climates.
The source code is open source under the MIT License, and the issue tracker is public. Files are published for Forge on 1.12.2 only, with the latest dated 2026-09-27. The author has said that updates beyond bugfixes and minor improvements are not planned, and that work on current versions of Minecraft is not planned at the moment.

Moderner Beta is also a port of the Modern Beta generators, but it is open source under the MIT License, published for Fabric, Forge, NeoForge and Quilt across 1.20 – 26.3, and is server required with client optional. Stripify is a Forge-compatible option for 1.21.1 only, under the MIT License but not open source, and it is server required with client optional. Brick Pyramid Infdev - UpPort is client and server, not open source under the MIT License, and covers 1.18.2 – 26.2 on Fabric, Forge and NeoForge.
