Minecraft Backrooms

by Maria_Bulletfest

Minecraft Backrooms, a NeoForge minigame by Maria_Bulletfest, recreates the endless liminal levels of the Backrooms for players to explore.

NeoForgeClient and serverMIT License1.20.6 – 1.21.1

What it does

The mod generates a set of Backrooms levels, each with its own layout and its own entities. The main place is a big open space with many dark areas, and the mod also includes a parking garage and a dense sewer level with rusted pipes and long halls. Red carpet and white walls fill much of the first level, and the mod keeps players near the windows out of view of the outside.

Difficulty does not rise steadily as the player goes deeper; it varies from level to level. Some entities run quickly once they notice the player, others take the form of a player-shaped figure that stomps loudly, and a smiling entity with an eerie white glow drains sanity quickly. Light repels some of them. A door that leads onward appears only far from the start and may not spawn near the player.

The mod runs on NeoForge for 1.20.6 and 1.21.1, and the server and every player need it, since the environment is client and server. It does not change normal survival gameplay until the player uses noclip. The latest file is 2.0.0.a for 1.21.1, an alpha release dated 2026-07-27, and the code is under the MIT License without being open source.

Key features

  1. Procedurally generated levels

Levels are generated procedurally, so each Backrooms area has a different layout instead of a fixed map.

  2. Level-specific entities

Each level comes with its own set of entities that accompany the player through that area.

  3. Varying difficulty

Difficulty changes between levels rather than increasing steadily, so some areas are calmer than others.

  4. Sanity drain

One entity drains the player's sanity quickly, and light keeps some of the threats away.
