MCEF2

by fhyjs

MCEF2 is a library that embeds a Chromium browser engine in Minecraft so that other mods can display web pages inside the game.

FabricNeoForgeClient required, server optionalMIT LicenseOpen source1.21.1

What it does

A library that embeds Chromium in Minecraft, with JCEF used to run the browser. The library fetches JCEF automatically through fast mirror servers when it starts, and pressing F10 in-game opens a web browser. Other mods can call the APIs it provides to build their own browser screens.

Builds exist for Windows on x86, x64 and arm64, for Linux on x86, x64, arm64 and arm, and for macOS on x64 and arm64, with macOS listed as tested. The mod is published for Fabric and NeoForge for 1.21.1 only, and the latest files are 1.0.1, dated 2025-12-19. Only the client needs it, while the server may run it too; the server does not require it. It is released under the MIT License and is open source.

Key features

  1. Embedded Chromium browser

A Chromium browser runs inside the game window, with the engine version reported by the mod's current build.

  2. Automatic JCEF setup

JCEF is fetched automatically through fast mirror servers, so players do not have to install it by hand.

  3. In-game browser on F10

Pressing F10 opens the browser during play, and other mods can use the same browser through the mod's APIs.

  4. Antivirus compatibility note

Some antivirus software prevents JCEF from starting, and the mod's files must be added to the antivirus whitelist for it to work.

Use cases

Mod developers

Mods that need an embedded web view can rely on the APIs MCEF2 provides instead of bundling their own browser.

In-game guides and pages

Players can open web pages during a session, such as documentation or wikis, without leaving the game.

Who it’s for: Mod developers who want an embedded browser for their own screens, and players who want a web browser in the game client.

Questions

Which loaders does MCEF2 support?

MCEF2 is published for Fabric and NeoForge. The latest file for each loader is 1.0.1 for 1.21.1.

Does the server need MCEF2 installed?

No. Only the client must run the mod, and a server can run it as well without needing it.

Why might the browser fail to start?

Some antivirus software blocks JCEF from initializing. Adding the mod's files to the antivirus whitelist allows MCEF2 to work properly.
