Markdown

by maxmag_change

Markdown lets players type chat messages with formatting marks, so bold, italic, strikethrough and other styles appear in the chat window.

FabricClient-side onlyAll rights reserved1.20.1

What it does

Markdown changes how chat messages are shown on the client. A player writes text with formatting marks and the chat displays bold, italic, obfuscated, strikethrough and underscored text instead of the raw characters. The changes affect only the chat window of the player who installs the mod, so nothing is altered on a server.

The mod runs on Fabric for Minecraft 1.20.1 alone, and installation requires MCEF (Minecraft Chromium Embedded Framework) next to it. Markdown is client-side only, so a player who joins a server without it sees plain text from others and still can use the styling with their own installation. The file is released under All rights reserved and is not open source.

Key features

  1. Bold text

Text wrapped in the usual markers appears in bold inside the chat window.

  2. Italic text

Text marked for emphasis is rendered in italics, leaving the surrounding message unchanged.

  3. Obfuscated text

Marked characters cycle through random glyphs, a style that vanilla chat cannot show.

  4. Strikethrough and underscore

Strikethrough and underlined spans are drawn in the chat, so crossed-out or emphasized words stand out.

Use cases

Chatting on a multiplayer server

A player who installs the mod can format their own messages while other players continue to see them in the chat window.

Single-player chat

The styling works in a single-player world, where it can be used to test formatting before using it on a server.

Who it’s for: Players who use Minecraft 1.20.1 with Fabric and want richer chat formatting on their own client. The mod suits players who already run MCEF or are willing to install it.

How it compares

Full comparison

mark it! is a Fabric and Forge client mod for 1.20 – 1.20.6, open source under the BSD 3-Clause License, with the same client-side environment. Minedown is a server-side only mod for Fabric and NeoForge across 1.21.1 – 1.21.11, under the GNU General Public License v3.0 only, so it changes what the server sends rather than what a player sees. ChatAbove is a client mod for 1.20.1 – 1.20.4 under the MIT License.

Questions

Does Markdown require MCEF?

Yes. MCEF (Minecraft Chromium Embedded Framework) is a required dependency and must be installed alongside Markdown on Fabric for 1.20.1.

Does Markdown need to be installed on the server?

No. It is installed on the player's side alone, so servers need nothing.

Which Minecraft version does Markdown support?

The latest Fabric file, 0.0.3, is published for 1.20.1 only, with a beta channel release dated 2026-06-26.
