Better Mace

by Eclipse Studios

Better Mace changes how the Mace's smash attack behaves, so that a fall from height produces a wave that hurts nearby enemies without adding extra damage.

What it does

Players who fight with the Mace get a smash attack that is closer to a real ground impact. When the attack lands, the datapack creates a shockwave around the struck enemy, and the smash itself does not deal more damage than the vanilla attack does. The effect is built from datapack functions rather than a Java code change, so the mod is loaded as a data pack on the server.

The author describes the project as a side project, and the author notes say a fix for a known bug is planned for later. The author also states that a fully realistic version would need block displays, which they considered less efficient and more time consuming, so the smash effect follows that tradeoff. Eclipse Studios is the original creator.

Installation requires Fabric API. The mod is published for Fabric, Forge, NeoForge and Quilt across 16 release versions, 1.21 – 26.2. Only the server needs to run it, while a player who joins without it can still play, and the code is open source under the Apache License 2.0.

Key features

  1. Wave around the struck enemy

A smash attack creates a wave that affects enemies near the target, which the vanilla attack does not do.

  2. No extra smash damage

The smash attack does not apply additional damage, so the effect changes the impact rather than the damage numbers.

  3. Uninstall function

Running the mace:unistall function before removing the datapack folder clears the scoreboards and other data the datapack uses.

  4. Smithed conventions

The datapack follows the Smithed conventions, which supports compatibility with other datapacks that use them.

What the author says

Better Mace makes so the smash attack of the mace feels like a real smash attack. This datapack creates a wave around the enemy you hurt when performing a smash attack, it doesn't apply more damage or something like that.
