LOD Entity Rendering

by Steveplays

LOD Entity Rendering draws entities on Distant Horizons level-of-detail terrain, so mobs and players show up at long range instead of being missing.

What it does

Distant Horizons renders distant terrain as level-of-detail chunks, but entities are normally not drawn on those chunks. This mod adds that step, so creatures and other entities remain visible at distances where only the far terrain would otherwise appear. It is a Distant Horizons add-on rather than a standalone renderer, and Distant Horizons is required for it to do anything.

Files are published for Fabric, Forge, NeoForge and Quilt, all for 1.20.1, with 1.0.2 as the latest build. Servers that run it need every player to install it too. The code is open source under the GNU Lesser General Public License v3.0 only, and public links exist for the source, the issue tracker and a wiki.

Key features

  1. Entities on distant terrain

Mobs, players and other entities are drawn on Distant Horizons LOD chunks instead of disappearing at range.

  2. Built-in resource pack

A bundled resource pack gives entity colors that suit the level-of-detail rendering, including Create entities.

  3. Compatible with most Distant Horizons mods

Other mods that work with Distant Horizons are generally compatible, so the add-on does not replace the rest of a LOD setup.

Use cases

Long-range views on a server

A multiplayer server with Distant Horizons enabled can let players see entities across distant terrain, provided the mod is installed on the server and on each client.

Who it’s for: Players who run Distant Horizons on Fabric, Forge, NeoForge or Quilt with the 1.20.1 game version, and server owners who want entities visible at long range.

How it compares

Full comparison

Distant Horizons Height Toggler DHHT is client-side only, uses All rights reserved, and is published for Forge and NeoForge on 1.20.1, so it does not render entities on LOD terrain. Voxy Auto LOD is a NeoForge mod for 1.21.1 under the MIT License, and it works on either side, and neither side needs it.

Questions

Does LOD Entity Rendering need Distant Horizons?

Yes. Distant Horizons is a required dependency, and the mod renders entities only on the level-of-detail chunks that Distant Horizons produces.

Does the server need the mod installed?

Yes. A server running it needs every connecting player to have it too.

Which loaders and versions are supported?

Files exist for Fabric, Forge, NeoForge and Quilt, all for 1.20.1. The latest file is 1.0.2 for that version, released on 2024-12-31.
