Restart Server

by Steveplays

With Restart Server, a server operator can restart the game from an in-game command on Fabric and Quilt servers.

FabricQuiltServer-side onlyGNU Lesser General Public License v2.1 onlyOpen source1.18 – 1.20.2

What it does

Restart Server adds a command that restarts a dedicated server. The behavior is set in a restart-server.json config file, and a reload command re-reads that file without a full restart. The mod is a backport of a newer release line and is built to work in multiplayer. Singleplayer and LAN worlds are supported as well.

Installation needs Fabric API and Cloth Config API on the server. Only the server needs the mod, so players join without installing anything. Restart Server is open source under the GNU Lesser General Public License v2.1 only, and files exist across Fabric and Quilt, with 11 release versions in total.

Key features

  1. Restart command

A command restarts a dedicated server, so operators need no console access to start a new session.

  2. Configuration file

Everything is set in a restart-server.json file, which can be edited on the server without changing the code.

  3. Config reload

A reload command applies changes to the configuration file while the server keeps running.

  4. Singleplayer and LAN

The restart command also works in singleplayer and on LAN, not only on dedicated servers.

Use cases

Multiplayer hosting

A server operator can restart the game on a multiplayer server from inside the game, without logging into the host machine.

Who it’s for: The mod suits server owners who run Fabric or Quilt and want a restart command in the game. Players do not need to install anything, since only the server needs it.

How it compares

Full comparison

Server Restart Command is server-side only, open source under the MIT License, and built for Fabric 26.1 – 26.2, so it targets a newer version range than Restart Server. Simple Server Restart is also server-side only and open source under the MIT License, with files for 1.21.5 – 1.21.11. An operator on an older build needs this mod instead.

Questions

Does Restart Server need Fabric API?

Yes. Fabric API is a required dependency, and Cloth Config API is required as well. Both must be installed next to Restart Server on the server.

Do players need the mod to join a server running it?

No. It runs on the server alone, so players need nothing extra to join.

Which game versions does Restart Server support?

Files exist for 1.18 – 1.20.2, with the latest file for 1.20.2 published on 2023-06-28 for Fabric and Quilt.

In the catalog

Restart Server is one of 8,016 Management mods on ModsFinder, and one of 5,930 Management mods for Fabric. 12,076 mods support Minecraft 1.20.2.
