Distant Horizons

by jeseibel

Distant Horizons renders terrain far beyond the normal render distance using simplified level-of-detail chunks.

FabricForgeNeoForgeClient or server, optionalGNU Lesser General Public License v3.0 onlyOpen source1.12.2 – 26.3

What it does

Distant terrain is drawn as lower-detail versions of chunks, so render distances of 256 chunks and more become possible at a low cost. As an example from the project, one screenshot uses a game render distance of 8 with a mod distance of 512.

A client copy alone builds detail data as the player explores; a server copy is optional. Shaders work only with packs built for Distant Horizons, and versions 2.1.0 and newer need a recent Iris release. The author suggests a concurrent garbage collector and more allocated memory. Code is open source under the GNU Lesser General Public License v3.0 only.

Key features

  1. Level-of-detail terrain

Far chunks are drawn in simplified form, extending the visible landscape.

  2. Huge render distance

Distances of 256+ chunks become practical.

  3. Shader pack support

Shader packs built with Distant Horizons support can draw the distant terrain alongside the normal scene.

  4. Generated detail storage

Level-of-detail data is kept between sessions once the area has been explored.

Questions

Does Distant Horizons work with shaders?

Only with shaders made with its support in mind, and from version 2.1.0 only together with a recent Iris release.

Is a server install required?

No. The mod works on either side, and neither needs it.

How much memory should be allocated?

The author suggests 6–8 GB for CPUs with 4–8 cores and 12–16 GB for 10 or more cores.
