Loading Backgrounds

by Lupin

Loading Backgrounds lets a resource pack replace the background image shown on Minecraft's loading screens with any customizable picture.

FabricForgeNeoForgeClient-side onlyAll rights reserved1.20 – 26.1.2

What it does

Background images are added through a resource pack. Image files placed in the gui/backgrounds folder of the minecraft textures are picked up as loading screen backgrounds, and a pack.mcmeta file is needed for the pack to load. The mod is intended for modpack creators who want loading images that match their pack's content.

Only the player's game needs it, and servers run without it. It is published for Fabric, Forge and NeoForge across 15 release versions, 1.20 – 26.1.2, and is released under All rights reserved, so the code is not open source, although public source code links exist. Fabric and NeoForge files are currently at 1.8.1 for 26.1.2, and the Forge file is at 2.0.0 for 1.21.4.

Key features

  1. Custom loading backgrounds

Any image placed in the backgrounds folder of a resource pack can be shown behind the loading screen.

  2. Numbered image files

Files named image1.png, image2.png, image3.png and so on are the expected naming pattern for backgrounds.

  3. Packable with other resources

Background images can be bundled into any resource pack alongside other assets, without a separate install.

  4. Example resource pack

An example resource pack is provided to show the expected folder layout and file structure.

Use cases

Modpack loading screens

Modpack creators can load their own images as backgrounds so the loading screen matches the pack's theme.

Who it’s for: Modpack creators who want to give their pack a distinct look during loading, and players who build resource packs with custom backgrounds.

How it compares

Full comparison

Enhanced Loading Screens works on Fabric, Forge and NeoForge for 1.21.1 – 1.21.10, is client-side only and is released under All rights reserved, so it is not open source. Return Dirt Background is a Fabric-only client mod for 1.20.5 – 1.21.4 released under the MIT License, so it is open source. Loading Backgrounds, by contrast, is driven by image files in a resource pack rather than a separate screen mod.

Questions

Which loaders does Loading Backgrounds support?

It is published for Fabric, Forge and NeoForge. Each loader has its own file, and the latest Fabric and NeoForge files are 1.8.1 for 26.1.2.

Does the server need Loading Backgrounds?

No. Players add it to their own game, and a server needs no copy.

How are background images added?

Images go in a resource pack under assets/minecraft/textures/gui/backgrounds/, named like image1.png, and the pack needs a pack.mcmeta file to load.
