Keep Inventory Nerf
by uhmbyee
Keep Inventory Nerf changes what a player loses on death when the keepInventory gamerule is on, so a death costs a few random items and some experience instead of everything.
What it does
With the keepInventory gamerule set to true, a death normally keeps every item. This mod instead lets a death drop only between one and three random items from the inventory, and only a small percentage of experience is lost. The number of items is set by the keepInventoryMinItemsToDrop and keepInventoryMaxItemsToDrop gamerules, and the experience share by experienceLossPercentage. The death message reports which items dropped and how many experience levels were lost.
The mod is aimed at the balance between keeping a full inventory and facing a real penalty for dying. It draws inspiration from games such as Stardew Valley and Hytale, where dying costs only a few random items. New worlds have keep inventory enabled by default, while existing worlds need the gamerule turned on manually. The Recovery Compass is not affected by the change. Keep Inventory itself is a debated subject in the community, and this mod is one way of splitting that difference.
Keep Inventory Nerf is for Fabric and runs on client and server, so the server and every player need it. It is published for 1.21.9, 1.21.10, 1.21.11, 26.2 and 26.3, with 1.2.0 for 26.3 as the latest file, and is released under All rights reserved, so it is not open source.
