Just Chat Range

by Nantag

Just Chat Range limits which players see a chat message, so that text reaches only those within a set number of blocks of the sender.

FabricServer-side onlyAll rights reserved1.21.11

What it does

Normal player chat is shown only to players inside a configurable radius around the sender. The default radius is 64 blocks, and an operator can change it with the chatrange set command to any value up to 100 blocks. Messages sent through the server console are always broadcast globally, so they ignore the radius.

The same range applies to other server messages tied to a player. Death notices and advancement announcements reach only nearby players as well. The mod is a server-side Fabric mod built for Minecraft 1.21.11 and requires Fabric API. Clients need nothing installed, and players join a server running it without any change on their side.

Key features

  1. Proximity chat

Player chat text is delivered only to players within the configured block radius of the sender.

  2. Radius limit of 100 blocks

The chatrange set command accepts values up to 100 blocks, and the default is 64 blocks.

  3. Death and advancement messages

Death notices and advancement announcements follow the same radius as normal chat, so distant players do not receive them.

  4. In-game configuration

Operators can change the radius with commands while the server runs, or edit the config file while the server is stopped.

How it compares

Full comparison

Proximity Chat Only also limits chat by distance, is server-side only and runs on Fabric for 1.21.1 – 1.21.11, but it is not open source and is released under All rights reserved. Chat Toggles is client-side only, open source under the MIT License and covers only 1.21.10 – 1.21.11, so it changes what an individual player sees rather than what the server delivers. Blocketing is server-side only, open source under the MIT License and covers 1.21.5 – 1.21.10.

Questions

Does Just Chat Range need Fabric API?

Yes. Fabric API is a required dependency, so it must be installed on the server next to Just Chat Range.

Do players need to install the mod?

No. It runs on the server alone, so players need nothing extra to join.

Who can change the chat radius?

Commands require operator permissions at gamemaster level. The radius can be set with chatrange set, and the mod starts disabled after a first install until chatrange activate is used.

Does the radius affect console messages?

No. Whatever radius is configured, a message typed into the server console still reaches every connected player.
