I See Your Chunks

by Lukarbonite

I See Your Chunks streams the real terrain around distant players, so their surroundings stay visible past the render distance.

FabricClient or server, optionalGNU Affero General Public License v3.0 onlyOpen source1.20.1 – 26.2

What it does

The server sends terrain chunks around each player that a client is viewing, and a client that has installed the mod draws those chunks through Voxy's far renderer. Distant players then stand on actual geometry rather than a model hovering over a blank backdrop beyond the world's border. Only chunks that are already loaded are sent, so the server generates nothing new for this purpose.

Lighting and occlusion follow the chunk data received from the server. Torches, lava and sky light come from the packet's real block and sky light values, and a player behind a hill is hidden by the terrain itself rather than by an approximation. Mobs and mounts are shown standing on the streamed ground, and a slider sets how many chunks surround the viewed player, growing outward nearest-first and capped at the server's render distance. Clients announce themselves through an opt-in handshake, so the server sends nothing to anyone who did not ask for it.

The mod is open source under the GNU Affero General Public License v3.0 only. It requires Fabric API and Voxy, and Mod Menu is optional. It is installed on both the server and the client, and it is published for Fabric across four release versions, 1.20.1 – 26.2.

Key features

  1. Real terrain for distant players

Distant players appear standing on the terrain their client has received, not on a floating empty background.

  2. No extra generation

Streamed chunks come only from what the server already holds, and nothing new is generated for the feature.

  3. Lighting from the chunk data

Far terrain is lit from the block and sky light in each chunk packet, so torches, lava and shadows fall where they should.

  4. Occlusion from present terrain

Players behind hills and walls are hidden by real geometry, and live block updates stay correct against the far terrain.

  5. Adjustable terrain footprint

A slider sets how many chunks surround the viewed player, with the radius capped at the server's render distance.

Use cases

Who it’s for: The mod suits multiplayer servers where players want to see distant players on real terrain, and clients that run Voxy for far rendering.

Questions

Does I See Your Chunks need Voxy?

Yes. Voxy is a required dependency, and Fabric API must also be installed next to I See Your Chunks.

Does the server need the mod installed?

Yes, it should be installed on both sides. The mod works on either side, and neither needs it, so installing it on the server and on the client is what makes the streaming work.

Does the server generate extra chunks for this?

No. Only chunks that are already loaded are sent, and nothing new is generated.

Which game versions does the mod support?

Files exist for 1.20.1, 1.21.1, 26.1.2 and 26.2, and the latest Fabric file is 1.0.4+1.20.1 for 1.20.1.

What the author says

I See Your Chunks renders distant players standing on real terrain, far past your render distance. Instead of a player model floating in empty space at the edge of the world, the server streams the chunks that player is standing in, and your client draws them as actual geometry — with real occlusion, live block…
