GroovyScript
by brachy
With GroovyScript, scripts written in Groovy can change recipes and other game mechanics on Forge 1.12.2 without a rebuild, and they reload while the game is running.
What it does
GroovyScript is a scripting mod for Minecraft 1.12 that lets a pack author adjust recipes and many Forge registry objects from Groovy files. Groovy code can reach nearly any Java class the game uses, so most features that exist in Java are accessible from a script. Scripts run in a sandbox in which sensitive operations are blacklisted, and the mod provides helper methods that shorten common tasks. Creating new recipes is the work most scripts do.
Scripts can be tested inside the game, and most Forge registry objects reload on the fly, which removes the need to restart between edits. Recipe registries that other mods use do not reload automatically; each recipe type needs a compatibility routine written by hand, so support varies from one mod to the next. The mod is open source under the GNU Lesser General Public License v3.0 only, and the source code, issue tracker and wiki are public. GroovyScript requires MixinBooter, and the Groovy libraries it depends on are fairly large. It runs on client and server, so the server and every player need it, and its files are published for Forge only, for 1.12.2.
Key features
Groovy scripting
Scripts are written in Groovy, a language with Java-compatible syntax that can call Java and Minecraft code directly.
Static and dynamic typing
Scripts can be compiled statically, and dynamic typing is optional for authors who prefer it.
In-game reloading
Most Forge registry objects reload while the game runs, so a changed script shows its effect without a restart.
Recipe helper methods
Helper methods for creating and altering recipes make the common cases shorter to write.
Sandboxed scripts
Scripts run in a sandbox that blacklists sensitive operations, limiting what a script can do to the game.
Compatibility

How it compares
CraftTweaker is the closest alternative. It is open source under the MIT License, published for Fabric, Forge and NeoForge across 1.3.2 – 1.21.1, and runs on client and server, so it covers more loaders and versions than GroovyScript, which is Forge-only for 1.12.2. Had Enough Items is a different kind of mod: it is open source under the MIT License, works for 1.12.2 on Forge, and needs only the client, with the server optional, so it does not script anything.
