FogRule

by Neuromuser

FogRule ties hostile mob spawning to a dense fog that players clear away by placing blocks, so a base grows as the surrounding area is made comfortable.

NeoForgeClient and serverMIT LicenseOpen source1.21.1

What it does

Hostile mobs spawn only inside dense fog, so darkness alone does not bring them into a room. A world starts blanketed in fog, and building pushes the fog back from the area around the builder. Opening the F3 debug screen shows a player's local coziness reading, which reflects how much fog surrounds the spot they occupy. The mechanic is meant for long-term worlds, where building up a base is the main way to keep monsters out.

The Discomfort Chest is a functional block crafted from a chest and a diamond. Once placed, it must wait for a configurable amount of real-life time, until 8:00 PM server time, before it can be used. At that point it aggressively consumes the coziness around it and applies Mining Fatigue to players within 50 blocks. The chest gives back random loot from three tiers, with the tier depending on how much coziness it absorbed. Players can use this to build large castles or let older structures decay into hostile, fog-filled dungeons, and then return to harvest high-tier loot from them.

FogRule requires Lootr, and the mod is distributed for NeoForge only. A server running it needs every connecting player to have it too. Files cover 1.21.1 and bundle SQLite JDBC. The source code is public, and the code is under the MIT License.

Key features

  1. Fog-bound mob spawning

Hostile mobs appear only where dense fog covers the ground, which ties their presence to how much of the area has been cleared.

  2. Clearing fog by building

Placing blocks removes the fog around them, so construction directly changes where monsters can spawn.

  3. Comfort level readout

The F3 menu shows a local comfort value, letting players see how far their cleared area reaches.

  4. Discomfort Chest

A craftable block that waits for a set real-life time, then trades coziness for random loot in three tiers.

Void Fog is client-side only, works on Forge and NeoForge across 1.9.4 – 1.21.1, and is released under All rights reserved, so it does not change server behavior. Fogged is client and server, released under the MIT License, and built for NeoForge 1.21.1, which is the same version as FogRule. Rising Toxicity is client and server, not open source, and also only for 1.21.1 on NeoForge.

What the author says

This mod introduces a unique fog and comfort mechanic to Minecraft. The world is blanketed in a dense fog that players can clear away by placing blocks to build up their base. Hostile mob spawning is tied directly to this fog. Mobs can only spawn inside the dense fog, meaning that no matter how dark a room is…
