Random Respawn

by Neuromuser

Random Respawn sends a player to a random undiscovered place after death, instead of the usual bed or world spawn point.

FabricServer-side onlyMIT LicenseOpen source1.19.2 – 1.21.1

What it does

After a player dies, the mod picks a random point within a configured radius around 0,0 and checks it. Where the chunk at that point has never been loaded, the spot counts as safe and the player lands there. Where the chunk has already been discovered, the spot is rejected and another point is tried with a slightly wider radius, repeating until a safe place is found. The default range is 10000.

Only the server needs the mod installed, so players join without installing anything. Settings are changed from the server console, and the feature can be switched on or off for new players by default and for each player individually. It is built for Fabric and runs on 1.19.2 – 1.21.1, with the latest file, 1.3.0+1.21.1, targeting 1.21.1. The code is released under the MIT License.

Key features

  1. Random respawn after death

A player who dies is moved to a random point rather than the usual spawn location, so each death starts a fresh exploration.

  2. Safe location search

Chunks that have never been loaded are used first, and discovered terrain is skipped with a wider search radius.

  3. Per-player control

Random respawn can be enabled or disabled for each player, and a default setting applies to newly joined players.

  4. Console configuration

The default respawn range and the on or off setting are changed through the server console, with a default radius of 10000.

Questions

Does Random Respawn have to be installed on the client?

No. It is server-side only, so only the server needs the mod installed. Players join without installing anything.

How is the respawn location chosen?

The mod selects a random point within the radius around 0,0 and checks whether its chunk has been discovered. Undiscovered chunks are used; discovered ones are rejected and a slightly larger radius is tried.

Can random respawn be turned off for one player?

Yes. It can be enabled or disabled individually for each player, and a default applies to new players.

If this chunk has never been loaded by players and the teleportation location is safe, the player is teleported there. If the chunk was…
