FlexiblePortals

by crdtrd

FlexiblePortals lets nether and end portals take other frame blocks, a larger maximum size and a set of fixed rules for how they behave.

FabricServer-side onlyMIT LicenseOpen source1.21.8 – 1.21.10

What it does

Crying obsidian counts as a legal frame block for building nether portals. End portal frames can be harvested with a silk touch pickaxe, with diamond being the better tool. Nether portals are explosion proof, and fluid source blocks break portals that they touch. The maximum portal size is raised to 4096 blocks, and the shape a portal may take is adjustable.

The mod is server-side only: only the server needs it, and players join without installing anything. It requires Fabric API and is compatible with vanilla clients. Builds are published for Fabric for game versions 1.21.8, 1.21.9 and 1.21.10, with 1.0.0+1.21.10 as the latest file. The code is released under the MIT License, so it is open source with public source code and an issue tracker.

Key features

  1. Crying obsidian frames

Crying obsidian is accepted as a valid frame block for building nether portals, alongside the vanilla frame material.

  2. Frame blocks inside portals

A frame block can also sit inside the portal opening rather than only along its border, which changes the shape a builder can use.

  3. Harvestable end portal frames

End portal frames can be collected with a silk touch pickaxe, and a diamond pickaxe works better.

  4. Protected nether portals

Nether portals resist explosions, and fluid source blocks that touch a portal break it.

How it compares

Full comparison

Custom End Portal is server-side only, open source under the CC0 1.0 Universal license and published for 1.21 – 1.21.5, so it covers a different range of versions. Crying Obsidian Portals is client and server, open source under the MIT License and published for Fabric and Quilt for 1.21 – 1.21.1, so it needs both sides to run. ObsiCry is server-side only, open source under the MIT License and published for 1.21.5 – 26.2, which overlaps only with the newest FlexiblePortals builds.
