Fishing minigame
by shane_avenue
Fishing minigame turns the vanilla rod into an interactive game: a player casts into water, dives beneath the surface and steers the hook through depths to catch fish and treasure.
What it does
Once a rod is cast into water, the minigame opens automatically. The player moves the hook with the WASD keys to chase fish through different depths, and the catch depends on how well the hook follows them. Special fish, treasures and a fishing journal collectible are part of the catches, and rain changes what bites.
The mod is aimed at players who find vanilla fishing too passive and want a fishing loop with more to do. Enchantments can auto-cook caught fish, and a Fishing Chest holds the items gathered this way. A help command in the game gives a detailed guide to the controls and systems.
Installation works on Fabric and Forge for 1.20.1 only, and the environment is client and server, so the server and every player need it. The latest Fabric build is dated 2026-01-18 and the latest Forge build 2026-01-02. The code is under the Apache License 2.0, which is not open source.
Key features
Depth-based fishing
The hook moves through depth layers, and the fish at each layer differ, so the position of the hook decides what is caught.
Special fish and treasures
Rare fish and treasure items can be hooked during a cast, adding targets beyond the usual vanilla catches.
Fishing journal
A journal records the catches and collectibles the player has made, and a Fishing Chest stores them.
Auto-cook enchantment
An enchantment cooks fish as they are caught, so the food is ready without a furnace.

Use cases
Survival progression
Players who fish for food or rare items can use the minigame as a regular activity during a survival run.
Server events
Server owners can add the mod so that fishing becomes a shared activity with its own collectibles.
Who it’s for: The mod suits players who want fishing to involve active control rather than waiting, and server owners who want a fishing activity beyond the default rod.
How it compares
Tide 2 is open source under the Mozilla Public License 2.0, runs on Fabric, Forge and NeoForge, and covers 1.20.1 – 1.21.5. Pescatore is open source under the MIT License, runs on Fabric and Quilt, and is published only for 1.20.1 – 1.20.4. Both are client and server, like this mod, which is not open source under the Apache License 2.0 and is built for Fabric and Forge on 1.20.1 alone.
