Players who enjoy chess can play it inside Escher's Gambit, where the board is a sandbox and chess pieces move across walls and edges.
What it does
Escher's Gambit is a Fabric minigame in which chess-style pieces are crafted from a Chess Core item, obtained after killing a zombie, and then moved across a sandbox board. Pieces can be moved with a Rod, and a Removal Rod clears them. Rotation and movement across edges give the board an unusual geometry. Client and server both need the mod, and Fabric API is required alongside it. Files cover 1.18.2, 1.19.4 and 1.20.1, with 1.17.5 for 1.20.1 as the latest file, under the MIT License and open source.

The Chess Core item is obtained from a zombie and starts the crafting of chess pieces.
Rod movement
Pieces are moved with a Rod, and pieces of the same colour are removed when a Rod hits them.
Sandbox board
Figures move across walls and over edges of the board, which is set up as a sandbox rather than a flat grid.

Ultimate Chess runs on Fabric and Forge for 1.19 – 1.20.1 under the GNU Affero General Public License v3.0 only and is open source. Immersive Chess is Fabric-only for 1.19.4 – 1.20.2 and open source under the GNU Lesser General Public License v2.1 or later. MC Chess is Fabric-only for 1.20.4, is open source and uses the MIT License, as Escher's Gambit does.
